In 1970 people paid 1/8th of their monthly wage on rent assuming they made about 9000 a year, if you make 50,000 a year (which actually assumes two people living together and working, not one person) you pay about 1/3 of that on rent in most metropolitan areas (inb4 "dude just live in north dakota in a trailer working on the oil fields")

its expensive, but like privacy is important to me so i do it. i still about about $1000 in free spending money which lets me save about $500 a month. And usually I don't spent that $1000 so its closer to 1000 saved a month,.
