More than that, sometimes Google goes after companies for things their employers did in previous workplaces, or things they do in future workplaces.
Legislation has nothing do to with this, btw, it's not legal repercussions that are the major issue here but the "voluntary" process Google imposes on their property with regards to IP enforcement.
