It explains a lot of their behavior too. The whole "rat king tea" that Mococo does is not something even most lower middle class income people would bother to do. They are still deeply rooted in the mindset that they don't need many individual possessions because they can just share things with each other. Everything about the way they handle money screams "we've been barely scraping by for a long time so we have a very frugal mindset even though we have disposable income now."
