For me I just like stories that play around with ideas like the ones played around with in it. Nature of reality, what makes up a person, interesting mental states, these are all things I like seeing peoples' perspectives on. So it's nice when the author sets up some well written characters and throws them into a scenario where those things can be seen.

I don't feel like they were made to be fappable, but were made to really crush the mental state of the characters involved in them. And those awful mental states were one of the things the author wanted to show or they wouldn't have driven so much of the plot.
