I'm not one for the stupidity argument, but people who fall for grifts or deep in the sunk cost fallacy, will reflexively defend whatever causes their suffering, and is in grave denial about their suffering in the first place, and will downplay it, or even blame fellow victims. You will absolutely see the same behavior with cult members and victims of abusive relationships.
It is not hyperbole to compare the company to an abusive relationship or a cult. In group mentality is the root to a lot of evil.
