Boton and I squatted back to back on the edge of my backyards cliff overlooking the rolling waves of the nearby sea. The blood red sky melted into golden clouds parted by a gigantic Jupiter sized asteroid hurtling towards earth. The local news did its best to downplay it to avoid a outright panic a month ago, telling people it would scoot by just out of our orbit. Then two weeks ago they admitted it would probably impact but our atmosphere would burn it all up till it was the size of a golf ball. Then a week ago they informed us that it would probably be the size of Texas but it'd be ok if we got to a shelter in time. Then just a hour ago, the tvs went dead, and the radio stations filled with static, and the phones lines cut to nothingness, cementing in the fact that we were in fact fucked.
Botan showed up at my doorstep within minuets after the phones went dead, banging frantically on my door with enough force to cause the solid steel door to shudder and almost buckle inwards. While she tried her best to remain stoic, she was visibly shaking and when she saw me she engulfed me in a Lion hug, (think a bear hug but with more substance), and buried her face in my shoulder. When I placed a hand on the back of her shaggy hair I heard her let out a cute little whimper, and I felt my shirt dampen. The poor Lion was terrified, with good reason.
One thing led to another and we grabbed the last two bottles of Smirnoff and headed to my backyard, since the gigantic space rock all to visibly was encroaching upon our planet's atmosphere. You could hear the rumbles of it getting closer, and you could smell burnt stone and space dust. It sort of smelt like sulfur but more alien I guess. But me being there seemed to steel Botan's will and she followed me to my favorite hangout spot, and the reason why I bought this house to begin with.
While it had a basically non existent front yard besides a mailbox and a path up to my door, it had a massive backyard, and the crown jewel was the gorgeous cliff and sea expanse. It had some of the most beautiful sunsets I had ever seen, and ironically this was one of the best.
Wordlessly we made our way to the edge of the cliff, and each taking a bottle of vodka we squatted down, leaning against each other for support. She had, after all shown me the joy of slav squatting, and the fact she casually showed me her back was a sign of immense trust. I could feel her chugging the entire bottle trying to gain some much needed courage, since she could see our end hurtling towards us at astronomical speeds.
At the rate the asteroid was bearing down on us, I was doubtful we even had a hour left. Before I could say anything though, Botan's small voice cut the silence.
"Hey, remember when we first met?" I could feel the rumble of her voice through her back, and I felt her tremble slightly as she spoke.
"Yeah we did that stereotypical anime bumping into each other meeting."
"Good shit right? You were awesome for buying me a new lunch"
"How could I let such a cute girl starve?" I teased back
I felt her breath hitch, and her her muscles tensed.
"We would have never met if I never turned that corner huh?"
"Probably not, it kinda was a once in a lifetime encounter."
"Was it worth it?" She murmured, before taking a long swig of her vodka.
"Very much so, I got to spend several years with the cutest lion."
Botan took in another labored breath and began to tremble slightly. I was about to ask if she wanted to be held but she instead rested the back of her head against mine. Her fluffy mane fell over my shoulders and entered my peripheral vision.
"Anon do you believe in the after life?" Botan's voice was the smallest I had ever heard it, and It carried a crack in it deeper than the grand canyon.
"I like to think I'm an agnostic. I never really practiced, but I do believe in a higher power."
"Then promise me we'll meet again, that you'll come find me on the other side."
Determination flowed into Botan's voice and I felt her back flex, pushing me forward. She spun around and grabbed me by the shoulders. I could feel her black talons sink into my shoulders. A smile crept across my lips, that was my lion, always finding ways to keep herself going strong.
"Fuck yes we will, if you don't find me first, I'll find you!"
I reached out and petted her head, and she let out a soft sound and nuzzled into my hand. The rumbling became louder as the retardedly large space rock entered our inner atmosphere.
There was no time left for pleasant moments. Botan hearing what she needed too reached into her coat and pulled out a small 9mm and handed me one. She raised it to the side of her head, and with a salute, pulled the trigger, and tumbled down the cliff side into the hungry sea below.
Following suit I raised my own 9mm and pulled the trigger, and was consumed by a comforting wave of blackness before I was eaten by the sea.
(This was kinda more dark than I'm used to)
