How did hololive got their popularity?
By following nijisanji's footsteps and literally copying them.
After they failed to do so, they tried to find a harbor among chinese fans.
Chinese fans referred Hololive by latin lettered 'hololive', which in combination with a keyword 'vtuber' helped to make youtube algorithm think that vtuber = hololive. That lead to a unfair bias in youtube algorithm and rapid growth of hololive's western audience. Then many youtubers start getting interested in vtubers, and because of biased youtube algorithm, they too thought that vtuber = hololive. After regular youtubers, there was a turn for anitubers. Literally all anitubers started advertising hololive. And this is about the time, hololive announced their EN branch.
