>>69965921It's not a real genre. "Emo" evolved completely separately from the music scene and started as a fashion thing. Most bands that music snobs consider "emo" would never characterize themselves as such (or outright refused the label) and the few that called themselves emo were grifters.
When emos talk about emo music they talk about the punk and alt rock they listened to while they went through their emo phase.
When hipsters talk about emo music, they talk about some weird invented subgenre of punk that only exists in the mid-90s and early 2000s, is completely identical to the punk that comes before and after and only really exists in their head.
