>>70252218Demonologist is a ghost hunting game with two significant twists from the Phasmophobia formula (Phasmo essentially created the "ghost-hunting" genre despite not being the first). First, similarities to Phasmo are:
>There's a ghost you need to collect evidence to identify >This ghost can begin hunting and can kill the player>The win condition is to identify the ghost and LEAVENow, some smaller deviations between them are:
>There aren't many "hiding" locations (i.e. lockers). You need to hide normally>There aren't many ways to "shake off" a ghost that's hunting you>Ghosts run SLIGHTLY slower than you when hunting, except for certain types, but the hunts last a LOT longer and you can be trapped in a corner>"Easy" mode is actually more active than "Hard" mode (the opposite of Phasmo)>You can buy stuff to decorate the lobby, and one of the options is a cat. This cat will periodically eat cat food and gain weight, so if you wait long enough, it'll become FUCKING HUGE since there's no cap on how much weight it gets from eatingNow, the reasons it actually gained popularity instead of falling to the wayside like This Is A Ghost:
>1: The MapsThe Maps in Demonologist are amazing. They're carefully-constructed set-pieces meant to create fear in a player new to it. This is done REALLY well, but as a side-effect of such detailed maps, the effects aren't random and thus lose its impact on replays. Throughout each map, including the lobby, there are also voice-activated easter eggs that will trigger an effect ranging from campy music playing to being jumped by the literal Bloody Mary. Again, these aren't random so the efficacy reduces with more usage, however cool it is.
>2: The ExorcismWhile the goal of the match is to identify the ghost and leave, players can almost always opt for exorcising it. Sometimes it's impossible, as you need items which aren't normally provided for you from the shop, but the option to attempt this isn't very hard to achieve. After identifying the ghost, you must proceed with a map-specific exorcism ritual while avoiding a VERY agitated ghost, which may or may not be easy to do. The Exorcism ritual components themselves may also be randomized (i.e. one of the exorcisms requires you to change three clocks in the house to the ghost's death time, which changes).
You can think of Demonologist as a prettier, more shallow Phasmophobia with its focus being on a cooler initial experience than an addictive gameplay loop. It'll most likely be more interesting than Phasmo if you've never seen it before, but playing the game would make you realize it's just not very fun after its initial scares.
