It’s part of your language development that you pick up on the distinctions between certain sounds that are actually very similar but because the language everyone around you speaks recognizes those subtle distinctions your brain learns to recognize them too. For sounds that are not important to the language you speak you will remain blind, so to speak, to the subtle difference between them. Japanese makes no distinction between L and R sounds.
