Even after going to the army (we're talking turn of the millennium) and actually using assault rifles and machine guns (using belts and magazines), I kept using the english word "clip" for years because I honestly thought it meant what "magazine" is.
Funnily enough, I first looked up the correct word in the dictionary because someone in '09 4chan made the exact same kind of quote you did right now.
