She doesn't have to be the best, but she has to know that not being the best is okay.
And it's one thing to say that to yourself, which we know she does, but it gets tougher to do that once you have to face the reality of it. If this is what she wants, then she has to be able to imagine her parents actually watching her give an average-skill performance on stage that she worked really hard on, and be totally fine with that. Otherwise, if her first thought is always "God I hate being on stage," then she's just going to keep asking herself what she's doing there until she finally stops.
