From the female streamer's perspective, anonymity might be valued by many, but is less important than the sheer freedom and massive convenience of not needing to put on makeup just to play a fuckin' video game.
Vtubing took off mostly because it gathered fans. Those fans gathered for a variety of factors, such as the pure novelty and preferring to look at an anime-styled avatar. The technology becoming easier to access was also a huge factor. A similar number of people would have enjoyed vtubers in 2012 (for example), but the technology wasn't quite there.
