I mean, it is fundamentally flawed in the assumption that either one being more successful is better than the other when such things don't necessarily apply that way in the entertainment industry. A G1 could simply be so good that they always stay ahead of G5. On the other hand, succeeding generations growing at a faster rate means that the overall audience has grown.
In reality, the only thing that you would look at is the MoM/YoY growth that the individuals/group scores and measure it against your own standards for success to determined if they are growing the way that you expect them to. Remember back when there was the arbitrary "rule" that you would get your 3D at 100k subs and then Holos started getting 100k subs day one? Or how about that 1M milestone?
Ultimately +% growth is better than -% growth and the data is easy to obtain and understand, so looking at it as a form of either/or is only going to lead to your making missteps and potentially hinder you in the long term.
