Part of it might actually have something to do with the color scheme and that the algorithm is not necessarily meant to deal with drawings. Computers trying to analyze images will analyze them very differently if you just swap some colors around, while humans may not be able to tell the difference between the two if you don't give them both of the images at the same time. Also the algorithm seems to be harder on some channels if their content is generally closer to the line. As where if your content manages to be safer most of the time as far as the algorithm is concerned it seems that you can get away with more. Not always the case though.
That said even if we could look at the algorithm and see exactly how it works, we would probably still be wondering why it does more than half the things it does.
