>>7142453Broadly speaking Japan has nationalistic tendancies and sentiment is widespread, yes, but if you actually go there you'll find plenty of people - especially in the younger generation, the creative industries and the middle-middle class - who are against nationalisism and racism.
Also nationalism does not necessarily equal consistent xenopobia. Japanese are like other Asians in that they're fiercly territorial and obsessed with borders, and are super reactionary, but if you're not Korean, Chinese or SEA they mostly don't give a shit. They particularly love Europeans.
Of course if you get your ideas about Japan from /jp/ you probably think the netto-uyoku and "Hirohito did nothing wrong" boomers are the majority of the country, but most Japanese are sheep that just believe what the papers tell them to, and there's a sizeable liberal population. The opposition parties are a fucking laughable incompetent mess prone to self-sabotage, but an increasing number of Japanese hate the liberal party too.
