If she was standalone and there weren't a thousand other vtuber models to compare her to I would have thought "meh it's just alright" but no, we can see clearly it looks weird next to everything else, most notably NijiEN wave 2 all having extremely good designs (well Selen is debatable, but Rosemi/Petra are very high tier). It's not like the capabilities of artists dried up. They just had no standards looking over it.
In particular Redjuice's noses just look odd facing from the front, looks like she has a big zit on her face basically. Her semi-transparent forehead bangs also look weird, like it's matted greasy hair or something because it specifically turns brown and translucent compared to the rest of the hair, and the red streaks being on top make it look like htose pieces haven't been touching the forehead so didn't get.. greased. Like seriously what the actual fuck, how did Cover okay this?
I'm not ragging on the model to diss Irys - actually, I like her voice and personality, and tried to get over the model. I wonder if I would have thought she was ugly if /vt/ didn't immediately pan the design and I had never heard that critique - I think I just wouldn't have watched her but been unable to really pin down why I wasn't liking her so much, just like how I for some reason never watch some Holos who I now consciously realize I simply don't like their design (like Aki). It's kind of tragic that she got bar-none the worst model in Hololive easily, probably one of the worst corporate models ever actually, when she is a solo debut so literally all the focus is on her alone repping the vsinger branch and it's so fucking important to your trajectory and reception - look at Gura carried so far by how cute she is; she knows that design did a ton of the work hence went out of her way to collab with Nacho mama. Why? Show of appreciation, because she at least in that respect Gura isn't dumb and knows how crucial that was to her success. Kiara from day 1 was being nitpicked for her design, still is to this day and mysteriously lags behind the rest of HoloEN despite so much effort on her part, alongside Ina who also has a kind of fucking weird design. Ina's is not bad IMO but definitely is the most monster-girl-looking of the bunch so probably is a permanent filter as well; you just don't hear critique of that around these parts because most people love monstergirls here, but that may not be the case across the internet.
