Watches have been overpriced status symbols since forever, but I don't think anyone's purchased a watch for actually telling the time since the early 2000s when carrying a Nokia brick became commonplace so being an expensive piece of Jewelry to point at and say "I can aford to waste money on this" is the entire point of a watches existence now.
