You'll be able to avoid some of the common errors more quickly but you won't have the vocab or grammar overall. And of course, that's a ton of hard work, whereas with MTL you just have to sit on your ass and wait.
I don't really see the reason to do your reps unless you're planning on emigrating to Japan. Anime and manga are usually translated, and for those that aren't we'll probably have capable MTL within the decade. If you want to live and work in Japan you'll need to the conversation skills but simply consuming Japanese media as an EOP is extremely easy whereas learning Japanese is extremely hard, and those years of time and effort could be expended on something more enjoyable and/or marketable.
That said, if you just love learning foreign languages, go ahead.
