Besides your corpo-exclusive programs, Vtube Studio is used to run Live2D models and Puppetstring is used to run Inochi2d models.

Inochi could have been GOAT had it been written in C instead of D. Doing so would have made it so easier to adopt and integrate it into the existing FOSS ecosystem. All the dependencies for it are just bindings for C libraries anyway. The Danish tranny chose D anyway to feel even more SPEHSHUL!
Now he wants people to pay for precompiled binaries, because he knows full well what a pain in the ass it is to set up the whole D toolchain for people not in the know.

I've used D, it really isn't that bad. D has native C FFI and bindings and there's a native C ABI that was written for it at https://github.com/Inochi2D/inochi2d-c but that isn't even the main issue. The problem is that it's still not feature complete yet let alone on parity with Live2D on a production level unless you want crashes and bugs popping up and using terrible user interfaces to accomplish that.
No one is going to adopt it until some corpo decides from a tech standpoint to inject some serious cash into the project. And given how badly Vtubing has gone this year, I doubt that cash is going to come from them. Yes, it does hurt adoption it's not a drop-in replacement for Live2D but Live2D has made some truly atrocious tech design decisions and there is a lot of baggage there from originally being intended for dumb shit like powering VN animations and Barecode Kanjo. So people will continue not to use Inochi2D until it can at least get to a point where end to end usage is stable.

Yeah, I think given its pace, it might be tentatively in alpha access in 2026 and might enter beta by the end of the decade. Absolutely not going to take over anytime soon.

This is the first time I hear about Inochi2D, and from what I've read in this thread it's a buggy mess ? I'll give it a shot just to see if it's really that awful.

My expectations are pretty low but I hope I can at least manage to fully rig a model with Niji tier movements and physics without getting a migraine.

Live2D's website has free models you can download and mess around with, and there's fuck knows how many tutorials on YouTube, Twitter, and pretty much any social media platform you can think of.
If you're looking for a quick 1 min read about a specific parameter, I'd recommend searching on Twitter/Pinterest. But for more in depth explanations, then go for Youtube.

Omori Kira's old tutorials helped me a lot when I was getting into rigging a few years ago, but I'd say they're somewhat outdated now.
