Anime, and vtubers, act as a sort of abstraction layer. When I was younger, it helped me get in touch with my emotional side, because it presented me with emotions separated from humanity by a few steps. Being in Japanese only heightened that for me. I suspect, in fact, that anime occupies the same sort of brainspace that would normally be occupied by religion.
Maybe its like that for you too?
