On one hand, it might be that Fauna is "strong" rather than her fanbase is "weak". On the other hand, "strong" people don't usually need attention from a woman behind an avatar to function.
Fauna's real fault was saying the quiet part out loud. People don't come to watch chuubas for reality, they watch it for a fantasy. There is some suspension of disbelief required to enjoy them, like in all fiction. Her saying it that "we shouldn't be friends" instead hit not only the unicorns, but many of the other fans.
The right move would be to continue enforcing the boundaries in private without saying what she said. The people who would pester her in private and get (gently!) BTFO'd would be rightfully viewed as schizos who got the fantasy confused with reality.
In all honesty, I only recently saw the video. She sounded quite a bit more emotional than I would've ever imagined. She cares about this. She probably got burned somehow and had to catch herself to not hurt herself and the fanbase any further. She pleaded with her fans but this outburst was probably addressed to herself.
