You can't fail the game though there is a soft goal of getting the shrine lit up by the start of Year 3, you don't really have to do it and you can be re-evaluated at any point by using a diamond on the shrine.
You can forage, you can farm, you can fish, you can mine, you can build, you can fight monsters, or you can just make friends. Or sleep all day. There's no penalties or game overs.
