Yeah, Fuwamoco's Japanese is just okay, refer to their 漢字でGO! stream to see them fumbling basic stuff. Bae's all right but Irys has the best Japanese by far and it's not even close.

Yeah, I can read manga and most novels without trouble, used to do translation but it's thankless with bullshit scanlator drama so I stopped. Don't have as many opportunities to speak/listen so I have more room to improve there

JLPT after N3 is testing your academic ability. N1 means you can handle college-level and business-level language. You should be able to handle manga as well, but manga and popular literature contain a lot of slang and new language that aren't tested. Languages are all constantly evolving, so to be really fluent in any language you have to be constantly using it and communicating with people who speak it. Imagine if you were in a coma for 40 years: you'd be very confused by the way people speak English nowadays. The best way to be able to read manga is to just read it. Use a dictionary or web search when you come across an unfamiliar phrase, and just keep reading everyday.
