This is one of those liberal phrases that means nothing. And also why they're poor and will never have anything. Not always I think it's more that they want independence from their family. A lot of the time probably in Rosemi's case it's an abusive or controlling family. The fact that families in other cultures have the "stay with family, family no. 1" thing is bullshit in my opinion.
