Barely anyone can really live from it tho but it depends how dedicated/loyal the audience you cultivated is, some vtubers with similar popularity can have a gigantic difference donations.
No jokes nearly 99% of vtubers stream to less than 5 people, most for not even 2 people, getting 10~20 regular is already a huge milestone. Most quit after a while of streaming days and days talking to an empty chat.
As far as how you get there, it's almost all network and luck, sure maybe being talented can be a bonus but honestly I see many big indies without anything going for them aside from knowing the right people or having had that one viral clip, and countless talented small indies who give it there all for months without ever going anywhere. So really, mostly luck and network.
