Her idea that she always has to prove herself comes from, probably, her parents punishing her for bad performance.
Now she subconsciously shifts the blame to other things, but realizes it doesn't make any sense, so she laughs as a coping/defending mechanism.
And laughing has so engraved into her behavior she does it all the time now.
