>>75682084this is super hard to explain if you arent in the military because its already hard to explain if you are in the military but her mom was in service during 9/11 so active service members got something called the post 9/11 GI bill and they could use that for college or have their loved ones use it for college. i believe mel said her sister used some of it and then mel used the remainder to go to college as well, mel was getting paid $1,200-$1,400 a month just to go to college which is why she didnt have a job while she was in school because they paid for her tuition and then some so she was able to use that money on bills. there are two different "chapters" of the post 9/11 GI bill and before she became a chuuba she ran out of the "good" version which pays for tuition and then housing allowance, essentially the $1,200-$1,400 was the housing allowance but since she lives at home it just went straight to her. she had to switch to the "bad" version of the post 9/11 GI bill which still gave her the same amount of money but she was responsible for tuition so she had to drain her savings account to pay for college and then started taking out loans to afford the last leg of college.
personally when i used the post 9/11 gi bill i was still working just because im a workaholic but there are plenty of military personnel or military brats who just use the money and dont work during college which is viable for some. the "bad" version has one big catch though, if you fail a class you have to pay the VA back and Mel failed a statistics course two semesters in a row and ended up owing $6,000 which is around the time she started taking out student loans.
