I live in a european capital and I've never seen a roach in my life and I've never seen a wild rat.
the closest I get is a story from my parents that they had a mouse in the house before I was born.
oh and there's like a state in the US that doesn't have any rats at all.

That's the state of Alberta in Canada and they do have a few rat outbreaks occasionally but it's heavily regulated.

As a European, I am not used to seeing the massive cockroaches they have in Japan. Neither am I used to earthquakes.
When I was there, neither of those things scared me at all. What scared me where things I already knew, like mosquitoes. Maybe they grow up with the expectation that you should be afraid of cockroaches?

A few Japs even got angry at me for laughing at my earthquake experience for some reason.

I never seen cockroaches here where I live but I do find house centipedes often, and those fuckers scare me, especially cause they suck at clinging to walls and sometimes fall down near me

Its all about what you're exposed to. From the vids I've seen, Japan seems like a very clean place so roaches have no reason to hang around. I didn't have no NES growing up so I killed roaches for fun. The ones we had in my home country were about 10x the size of the ones here in leafland. They can also smell you when you enter the room and if they like your smell they may even fly into your face/hair.
