Japanese occupation was way worse than the Dutch, and for the next few decades until the 70s the Japanese were very much hated. Since the 70s they flooded the Indonesian market and entertainment industry with their products even when they have some disadvantage, clearly an attempt to repair the relation between two nations.
The reason why Japan seems to be fond of Indonesia is unknown, you would know the real reason if you have access to their foreign ministry documents. But I bet it has something to do with Japan betting their future on Indonesia. Before the 70s, Japan was very close to Thailand, but for whatever reason they turn their focus to Indonesia.
Their foreign ministry advisor, a professor from some university, said that the key to South East Asia is Indonesia. Japan is the only country from the Western Allied Sphere to ever say that.
