>>76882633People have this perception that LGBT issues are all erased and it's a cushy liberal middle-class circlejerk but the reality is that people still lose families, face real discrimination, and have problems specific to their identity. It's so so so incredibly easy to form this perception because honestly it's everywhere and its worst, most mockable parts are shoved in everyone's faces. There is merit to the criticisms of the incredibly extreme bits of online discourse about identity politics. There is a measurable feeling of "cringe" to feel about people filmed in vulnerable moments, expressing weakness in a way deemed far too sensitive. In the US specifically, it really depends where you are, and if you're in a pretty liberal place, it can feel like everyone's accepted, but that's not true of people in like the bible belt or the deep south. And some people come from places outside the US, with cultures that discriminate much harder. It's nuanced, its difficult, the internet is ruining society and everyone's lives, and I don't have the answers.
