>>7772781A decade ago I realized I have enough time in my schedule to fit in some language classes. As I consumed a lot of Japanese media already back then, that was naturally my first choice, but for whatever reason it was a really popular choice for everyone, apparently not even because of anime, but because people in my college thought taking classes in non-Indo-European languages makes you cool and cultured somehow. And so I learned there were people literally camping outside the building where the sign-up sheets were posted, because that's another experience college kids like to brag about. I rolled in at noon, saw that not only Japanese but also French and Chinese were already full and picked Italian instead.
As I ended up never using Italian for anything other than lazy attempts to decipher comics on Sadpanda, I have forgotten pretty much everything to the point where I struggle to recall even personal pronouns. On the other hand I've picked up enough Japanese along the way, all the while never properly studying it, that I could get irrationally angry at the EOPs in the chat for not understanding what a chuuba is saying even if I completely missed every single good joke.
So the moral of the story is that you should pay attention to what's going to actually be useful for (you) and start doing your reps right now because by being here in this thread you are already showing a higher than average interest in Japanese. And like many other people have said, most chuubas use fairly simple Japanese and you'd be surprised at how much and how quickly you begin to understand as long as you put a little bit of effort even if it's going to be years before you can actually read Soseki in the original.
