The Overseer was wrong in restricting gun use in the Vault, because everyone there was well versed in firearm use and safety. They had a healthy gun culture, centered around knowledge, appreciation, and respect.
But the Boomers were right in blowing the savages the fuck up, because it was the best way to keep them from getting their damn, dirty hands on the guns. The savages had a toxic gun culture, viewing guns only as an instrument of destruction. Deservedly, it was the very weapons they coveted that would lead to their destruction.
An armed society and a peaceful society are not mutually exclusive, nor will one lead to the other. But guns are cool.
