They told her she's good but doesn't have any relevant experience so she started streaming as Mint to get some. She applied to Nijisanji while streaming as Mint (probably because other indies she was friends with also did so) and got accepted before next round of Hololive auditions rolled around. Back then Nijisanji EN looked like perfectly valid alternative to Hololive EN and she liked both companies in JP.
As for what happens after graduating from Niji, she still said she doesn't want to be an indie and needs to be in a group (corpo) for proper productivity because she's too introverted and self-conscious otherwise. This was in 2nd ep of her podcast with Matara where they also spent several minutes talking about JP corpos in a way that they sounded perfect for Mint specifically.
She has never expressed NOT wanting to be in a corpo either.
