That was his corruption that had already been in him. Despite becoming a "good guy" Vegeta still had a lot of darkness in his heart and that's why Babidi was able to possess him in the first place. He told this to Goku during their fight. I dont know how you missed this. The entire Majin Vegeta arc is him overcoming that darkness, which he eventually achieves with the ultimate sacrifice. It might have not killed Buu (which honestly should have killed him; the editors should have let Vegeta get that win), but it killed the corruption in Vegeta's heart for good and brought his own being to maturity.
