An example of this is if you rush to Margit instead of getting stronger, leveling up on the easier areas, and upgrading your weapons. But I'm not really trying to defend it, it's just an unfortunate reality of the game being open world and attempting to encourage that exploration. They're just doing the same with the DLC.
