The ambitions of a supposedly "communist" state, done in by their embrace of capitalism. What they have done is incredible. It's impressive. But it is not enough to "own" the century.
If you live in a Tier 1 city in the PRC, or are at least middle class in a Tier 2 city, you live a modern life like most other developed countries. However, this represents only 25% of the population. The other 75% is still living like poorer parts of Latin America, or worse. I say this having traveled around the PRC and around parts of LatAm.
