Like voodoo curses, they were terrifying for the locals, but because the europeans didn't believe in them, it didn't affect them, in that sense, you could say that the presence of god was much stronger in random puritan colony of New England than it'd be in London even in the 17th century, because everyone in that puritan colony would be scared shitless of literally everything around them
