While trying to escape he sacrifices himself to let his team’s plane take off after which he is promptly captured and sent to a Russian gulag. There he meets a man named Reznov, a Soviet WW2 veteran who hates Communists as much as the Americans do due to a betrayal from his superiors in the closing months of World War II. Reznov sacrifices himself to let Mason escape the gulag and tells him to kill the leading figures (Dragovich, Kravchenko, Steiner). Now Mason returns to the USA and is tasked by President Kennedy to kill the aforementioned people. But it turns out Reznov is somehow still alive.
