Ark is more entertaining to watch when you can get into bad situations and can't just replace everything you lost in a few minutes. The tradeoff to making losses meaningful is that there will be more downtime while you're building back up.
For example, imagine if they played on a low-rate server. That means everyone will be stuck with a shit low level ptera because it takes too long (literally hours) to tame a high level one. Imagine someone flies out to pick up a supply crate, which is itself an adventure due to constantly having to find safe places to land because the low level ptera has no stamina. In the supply crate they find a sweet blueprint, which is even sweeter because it's so hard to get to supply crates.
On the way back they're ambushed by flying ants that poison their ptera, grounding it next to a pack of terror birds. Maybe their ptera dies and they now have to try to get back on foot (or find somewhere safe to camp out until a teammate can pick them up). Or they die and they have to get someone to help recover the blueprint and their ptera. Either way the game just got more interesting, where on the high-rate server there'd be almost no chance of death and even if there was it might not be worth recovering the body because it would be quicker to tame another flier and find another supply drop.
