I've noticed a number of western artists on twitter etc may start out with what was originally a much cuter but more anime-looking style and then over time they got uglier and uglier making a more unique look. It isn't better because it gets more personalized, plain and simple. Maybe their art school teachers told them as much and made them believe everyone will think their shit is better if it's got some OC donut steel elements added to the designs. More memorable yes, but it's not in a good way, being different for the sake of being differen't isn't always better.
