since the director was more of a lib-hippie (as usual for the creative types in Hollywood), they decided to show the bad sides like the seemingly pointless loss of life, the increasing extremes in behavior when it came to dealing with bugs like experiments on live prisoners, indoctrination of children and the hopeless nature of the battle)
but since it was still a Hollywood movie it still made the bugs look ugly awesome and shooting bugs look cool, so nobody cared about the above
