>being a male Vtuber was already quite difficult in 2019 due to the lack of an established (female?) audience for themIt's the same with any other anime-adjacent companies (gacha games, clothing brands, etc); they only focus on pushing out female characters and attract only a male audience, then they say "oh, only men like this thing. Guess I'd better keep pushing out the same old thing since those are the only people that like this". And the few people that actually give males a try don't even bother consulting a single woman and when it fails they're like "oh, we tried, but they don't like it. Guess it doesn't work!". So you can't really get an established female audience if all you know is how to pander to a male audience. It doesn't take much to get one but people think it's difficult since they don't know anything about women in the first place. Notice how most weeb men for example still think fujoshi means "female anime fan".
>It could well be that Tanigo-san believed pushing the boys to a Fujoshi or BFE type route would have enclosed them into a niche that was just (perceived as) too small at the time.Shows how much he knows about a female audience and should have just stuck to Hololive being a female-only corpo. It would have benefitted everyone. That's why I say Holostars panders mostly to a male audience; obviously they'll have outliers with some women there but that doesn't change who their content mostly appeals to. You don't have to do forced shipping or in-your-face BFE to cater to a female audience and people who say that generally don't know anything about women's interests. However, it's pretty obvious when you're trying to pander harder towards a female audience. Women pick up on that and don't feel welcome, which is one of the bigger reasons why a lot of women feel turned away from Hololive as a whole.
>numbers wise the Stars aren't hurting or anythingTrue, I don't think Stars need to do anything drastic to try and get more numbers or money, I just pointed out that there are ones that complain about numbers and money and how it's easy for them to get more but they make dumb decisions that drive away potential fans that are willing to give more. I'm in no way saying they need to have the numbers of Kuzuha or Kanae or the money of 2022/2023 Luxiem and Noctyx, but if that's what they were expecting then there's a way to get to that point that they aren't trying.
>What are those handful of streams that women may like? There's the ones that are a little more obvious like the BFE crumbs that Flayon and Hakka used to sprinkle throughout their streams like pickup lines, but I'll name some that are more subtle. There's zatsu collab streams where the audience can get to know your dynamics between other guys better. Ruze's Hunt: Showdown ASMR streams where the viewer can imagine themselves being taught a video game by their gamer boyfriend (women like things left to the imagination, so even though this game appeals to men, yumejoshi can enjoy the stream in a different way). Vesper's long Outer Wilds streams, Flayon's long VN streams, any long stream where the guy is just talking for long periods of time and explaining the game mechanics in a nerdy way. Lore streams like Ruze's creative streams where he changes personality depending on the color of superchat he gets. I notice that women are way more into chuuni lore than men. There's Shinri being horny for ghost girls and monsters in general. There's Altare's cute mannerisms and how he acts childlike sometimes (making cute noises, being very excited over small things, etc). And there's being a general himbo like Axel. Women love dumb men. They just feel more harmless and it's endearing.
Note that these examples obviously do not mean "all women in the audience. If you do these things you are guaranteed to have women in your audience". It's just a general statement on how appealing to women works and that you should have some nuance when it comes to this kind of thing.
>they probably don't even imagine there is such a thing as a female unicornUnfortunately that mostly falls on us since female unicorns almost never speak up. We kind of just quietly leave without a word and the guy is left to figure out what he did wrong (which never works out since men suck at figuring things out like that). I've seen people finally be more vocal about that with Avallum so that's a relief.
