DEAD BEATS EP
*Reaper or Rapper - It's a shitpost song, but a charming one. Hearkens back to the days when she was stuck in a shoebox apartment with a goblin tech setup. Have I listened to it recently before now? No, but nostalgia is fun from time to time.
*RIP - Y'know what, I'm gonna stick up for this one. Yes, she's developed and grown since dropping RIP and getting shackled to it is probably really frustrating, but it was a right hook out of no where. Nobody saw this shit coming. Yes, it's cringe but it's also iconic. If she can look back on it and reflect that this was what she put out before she really got her feet under her, then she's doing very fucking well for herself.
*Dead Beats - This is actually the song I preferred off the first EP. It's still got that early-stage Mori cringe to it, but it's also got the early stages of Mori doing her playful malevolence bit. Maybe I just like being threatened by an anime girl, your mileage may vary.
*Live Again - Ah, the first bittersweet Mori song. I remember it was her outro music for a while there. Unfortunately this is going to be the part where someone tells me to neck myself but the "teehee" voice is distracting in 2024. Like I wasn't sure if I was being unreasonable until spotify rolled over to Go-Getters and yeah, she's forcing herself into a register that doesn't work for her as well as, say, EoaL. But like I said for RIP, this is what she built off and in this case was a demonstration that she wasn't an edgy gimmick bit. It is a great deal harder to be earnest than not, so I would say it's aged the hardest but that's mostly a testament to what came after.
Overall I'd say DEAD BEATS is... interesting listening to in 2024 and thinking about how far she's come. It's a proof of concept that grabbed immediate attention, and one need only look at where Mori is now to see how effective it was. It sure as shit roped me in. It also very much feels like a first EP, like "we started here." I don't listen to it very much anymore, because it is very much no longer who she is as an artist. But it's fun to reflect.
I have no idea if I'm actually going to keep doing this but listening to an album a day might be fun. Was Cursed Night ever on an EP or was that just a single? I'm pretty sure that was her next drop after DEAD BEATS
