She can play violin, but she's not particularly talented as a violinist. I was disappointed with her performance and lack of talent after they seemed to make a big selling point of it initially.

No, they don't. They learn the cheap and easy to learn instruments that get donated. Going to a school in a poor neighborhood you will find they have recorders, violins, a pile of triangles, three trumpets, and one piano. Violin is not an elite or difficult instrument to learn.

You can play songs on the guitar, piano, drums, triangle and the babyrecorder with minimal input after a handful of lessons unless you're retarded. To sound barely tolerable, as in to sound like a cat that's only being half strangled on the violin takes significantly more time/effort. Steeper playing curve. Get over that steep initial and it starts to plateau out and show that more regular incline up to pro.
