The story is still great, but back in 2010 before everyone and their mothers was doing meta shit it was MIND BLOWING. The characters are also memorable in the classic Yoko Taro way, and you'll appreciate the references in Automata more with prior understanding. You could easily argue the OST is one of the best in all of videogames. My only complaint is the new versions of some of the songs.
The PS3 version is pretty jank but endearing (much like the Drakengard games that preceded it). The remake shows the characters as originally intended (twink brother Nier), adds new content, and improves the gameplay in some regards (mainly combat feel).
It's worth experiencing either way.
