The holy mother Mary is another example of this, and her defining features are being a virgin and the one who cared for God/God's son. Neither of which is built on lusting after her.
In that regard, it's to be expected that a large population of lonely males would simply latch on to women who present themselves in the same way.

If you're that lonely and dejected, the illusion of a woman caring about you can do wonders for their psyche, if they actually use the feelings and illusions to actually repair their mental health.
At most I'd say only the truly devout deserve any level of negativity and scorn, the kinds who lash out at others over perceived sleights against their idol. But even then I honestly put more blame at the feet of the women here.
The difference is the virgin mother isn't someone you can pay five dollars to have them read a message you sent. You can donate to a church, pray, and think you hear her speak, but it's not 1:1. Prayer and the resulting thoughts frequently act as guiding forces in peoples lives, or at least reassurance. It's more akin to a disguised form of guided meditation.
In contrast, Sending money to a vtuber and hearing "I wuv you anon >w<" is more akin to a rave slut hugging you on the couch, before mounting you and popping some ecstasy in your mouth via frenching you, with her own tongue. It's pretty much only about a mutual exchange of shallow pleasure seeking, than anything meaningful or beneficial to her followers. (Though as I say that, I'm sure at least one Anon reading this post is going fucking wild, at the mere thought of his oshi rave slut'ing it up, for a night of degeneracy, with him)
