A lot of us have roles we naturally gravitate to more than others and being able to fulfill that role is satisfying on a personal level. Likewise, someone who gravitates towards a role but is unable to find it or fulfill it feels lost and depressed. While some people turn it into an ego thing they're not the same thing. The need to feel superior to others is driven by insecurity, the need to fulfill a type of role is driven by instinct. That's a very important distinction.

A lot of buildings and factories are constructed with an expected lifespan in mind and under the expectation that they will be used the entire time. If an apartment is empty half of the time, it may not make enough rent to cover its bills and initial construction costs. If that apartment doesn't get constructed with enough capacity, then housing will be too expensive, homelessness will rise, and all kinds of social problems will emerge. It's a huge lose-lose situation and a large drain on already scarce resources.
