This way the vtuber maintains authority over their own fans. When a vtuber is too casual with fans publicly, expect it to cause fights among fans as they begin to feel that the attention has not been spread evenly.
Maintaining a degree of separation also strengthens the community, because fans can just be themselves around each other without the perception that everyone else is acting phony around the vtuber.
