>>8466094>What do con crowds even look like nowadays? I assume that there is less "lolsorandumrawrxd" cringe, but also less light heartedness as it became more commercial?Yeah you've guessed it. Once it lost that aspect of "I wouldn't take my kids here", it loses something.
going years back AVCON here didn't take itself too seriously, the video game competitions were that, not "e-sports" full of tryhards and literal children. You could register on the day and win a competition in a team multiplayer with randoms you found on the day (who'd racked up hours in the game of course), no need for tryharding.
Sometimes they'd have old systems hooked up so people could play the classics. They'd have a LAN corner, for anyone to just jump on with others and play anything on the system. Now it's "oh you didn't sign up for the MvC tourney, well you can stand there and watch then".
Things still cool - the /cgl/ crew have some pretty dope outfits and can be cool people to hang out with.
The rest is redundant as consumers have better options. Buy overpriced merch from small-time importers? Just buy in the actual preorder direct from japan. Watch randomly screened anime? Just download it at home.
